![]() “Maybe because they co-occur so frequently you either aren’t aware of the mental sound until you strip away everything else,” Fassnidge says. We may not think about the sound visual motion makes because sound and motion co-occur all the time. ![]() Those who rated more than half of the GIFs at a level of 3 or above were considered to have experienced vEAR. In the study in Cortex, the scientists had participants view 24 GIFs and rate if they noticed an auditory sensation on a scale of 0 to 5. “A lot of people don’t realize they have this thing until you start testing for it in the laboratory,” Fassnidge says. Though the work is early, the published papers on vEAR suggest it’s a common phenomenon, with around 20 to 30 percent of people reporting hearing silent images. There are only a handful of studies on vEAR the first one was published in 2008. And then other people say it varies depending on what it is they are looking at.” For other people, it’s kind of like a white noise. “Some people describe it as a buzzing sound in their head. And the experience of it “varies from person to person,” Fassnidge says. Similarly, vEAR could be a crossover of the visual and auditory systems of the brain. And it’s pretty rare: Around 3 percent of people have these forms of synesthesia. It’s believed these crossovers happen because neurons from one area of the brain are highly connected to another, or because the connections between the brain areas are easily triggered. There’s a form of synesthesia where certain sounds produce physical sensations on the skin and in the body. The classic example is people who see a different color for different letters of the alphabet or for different numbers. In people with synesthesia, activation of one sense triggers perception of another. “The more we learn about the brain,” says Fassnidge, who recently completed his PhD at City University of London, “the more we learn it’s a very multisensory organ and that the senses can influence one another.” What is synesthesia? There’s also surround sound, which is most commonly available in the 5.1 format, but other formats exist, including 7.1 and Dolby Atmos. The BBC has a video on YouTube that demonstrates how binaural sound works: This is where we start to get into the realm of “3D sound,” which has become something of an umbrella term for several immersive recording formats, including binaural. The differences in binaural sound can be heard while using headphones and sounds more dynamic and realistic. This helps to recreate the natural way we experience sound, with certain sounds registering at different volumes depending on their position of origin. Like stereo, this is made by using two microphones, but the microphones are positioned on a dummy or a special configuration to better mimic how human ears are positioned. Then, there’s a special kind of stereo recording called binaural audio. ![]() This is the most widely used format in the modern era. There’s mono sound, which is recorded with one microphone and gives you one channel of audio (hence the use of term “mono,” which is Greek word for “alone” or “single”) You’re probably pretty familiar with stereo sound, which is recorded by spacing two microphones apart onto two channels (left ear and right ear). Without getting too technical for a beginner’s guide, when discussing audio, we’re usually referring to the five most common ways to record and listen to sound playback. Here we offer you some suggestions on achieving great sound for your projects. When the sound is recorded and produced well, your 360 audio content can go a long way to pulling your viewer in. For 360 video, sound may be an even more important consideration than for other types of visual mediums because of the high level of presence we’re trying to generate. When the visuals don’t match what we’re hearing, it can be confusing. Poorly recorded, distorted, muffled sound is unpleasant for the ear and can ruin an otherwise great video experience. Sound can distract us or take us out of a moment. 5 Chapter 5: Sound for 360 Video “Recording” by Randarey is licensed CC BY 2.0 ![]() It’s a mini Cold War epic, a fog-bound video that finds the band striking moody poses in among waves of dry ice on the cobblestones of Vienna (or bits of London that could convincingly pass for Vienna – both are used). Ultravox’s “Vienna” is an absolute classic of the genre. No longer simply a tool to shift singles, they became an art form in and of themselves. Videos could be aspirational (Duran Duran’s entire oeuvre, though let’s take “Rio” as the most obvious example), operatically over-the-top (Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart”), surreal abstractions (Eurythmics’s “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”), or, well, just about anything really. Videos moved into a whole new register, becoming little mini epics that gave an artist or band the scope to really indulge themselves as technology improved and everything became that much more achievable and, significantly, affordable. But by 1981 that approach was not simply dated but laughably inadequate. The famous four-heads pose, a series of video effects and some live footage, all blended together to create a whole. The video itself was an evolutionary process, as one might expect – if we take 1976 and “Bohemian Rhapsody” as our relatively arbitrary starting point it is, even by 1981 standards, pretty simple. The launch of MTV in 1981 saw America catch up with this “video aesthetic”, and in doing so paved the way for the Second British Invasion (since dozens of British groups had good-to-go content ready at their fingertips for the emergent station looking to fill air time) that gave synth-pop groups and the New Romantics, especially, a way into a marketplace that they would otherwise struggle to get a footing in. What’s interesting about the video is that Ant isn’t remotely unusual in doing this – quite the reverse, in fact, it’s an established part of what a pop band does in the late 70’s and early 80’s. It has some wit (Pironni’s “harp” playing) and panache, a simple storyline, an easy-to-replicate dance, and Ant looking his best as he imitates other pop-culture legends at the end of the clip (a confounding selection that consists of Alice Cooper, Clint Eastwood, Rudolph Valentino (!) and Ant’s own Dandy Highwayman). It’s an excellent promotional tool by 1981 standards. It’s a Cinderella riff, with Ant playing Cinders, the Ugly Sisters portrayed by two men in drag as per the usual panto approach, with Ant/Cinders liberated from a life of drudgery by the frankly astonishing sight of Diana Dors as the Fairy Godmother in a gravity-defying black dress leading us to a masque ball where everyone dances the “prince charming”. Take for example last entry Adam Ant, and more specifically the video for “Prince Charming”. Top Of The Pops regularly played music videos for more than half a decade before MTV arrived on the scene – this is where “Bohemian Rhapsody” comes in – and British acts were, generally speaking, much more attuned to the power of the music video than their American colleagues at the turn of the decade. Similarly, the idea that music, and specifically that music videos, could be something that people would sit down to watch rather than simply listen to, had been around in the UK mainstream for far longer than it had in the US. And certainly the song portions of Magical Mystery Tour, free of any other contextual connection to the movie they’re in, are straightforwardly music videos. The idea of “videos”, in the modern sense, had been around since at least 1966 with The Beatles recording specific promo clips for “Paperback Writer” and “Rain”, and arguably could be tied all the way back to A Hard Day’s Night. ![]() That’s not to suggest that either of those two events aren’t significant features in the development of their respective fields, but neither are the originators. In the same way that “Bohemian Rhapsody” did not invent the music video, MTV did not invent the idea of music television. “Depends on the scenes that we’re filming. This book offers a perspective that some may not have heard before. Ghostriders is a fantastic read for anyone interested in AC-130s in general or for those studying the conflicts in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. At times, the book places the reader on the edge of their seat with adrenaline pumping and is difficult to put down. Even without these accounts, Ghostriders places the reader inside an AC-130 receiving effective enemy fire while performing evasive and emergency actions keeping the reader engaged. Still, more accounts from the People’s Army of Vietnam and the aircraft maintainers could add to the content offering the reader more angles of the story. It offers references from the opposing side and some perspectives of the maintainers and ground forces. Walter additionally takes the reader through a chronological order of the operations adding to the ease of readability and allowing the reader to effortlessly keep track of the timeline.Ī minor shortcoming of the book is a few missing perspectives. Readers do not have to be familiar with gunships to understand the book. He also does an excellent job of explaining in detail each crewmember’s position on the aircraft as well as their roles and responsibilities. A great level of detail exists of the specific missions executed and offers a unique point of view from those who were there. Walter does a terrific job of telling the stories of crew members who flew on the AC-130 Gunships. But that did not come without a cost: 6 AC-130 gunships were destroyed, and 52 crewmembers lost their lives (286). These operations proved to be very successful, saving countless lives and destroying thousands of tons of supplies. Ghostriders provides detailed accounts of AC-130s hunting trucks on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and supporting ground forces in the area. In 2001, Walter was inducted into the Air Commando Hall of Fame and the US Special Operations Command Hall of Honor in 2011. He participated in every AC-130 combat operation from 1980–94. Yet, slowly, radio stations began playing The Sound Of Silence, first in Boston then in other parts of the country, when students went home during the holidays and requested the song on their local stations. The name Simon & Garfunkel was agreed upon, despite concerns that it sounded like a law firm, and they recorded an album, Wednesday Morning, 3AM, which was ignored by the press when it was released in November 1964, so Simon and Garfunkel went their separate ways once more. ![]() Garfunkel was impressed by his friend’s new songs, and on the basis of one song in particular, The Sound Of Silence, Columbia signed them. By then, Simon had finished university and had been performing in folk clubs in England, while Garfunkel was an architecture student but had put out some records. Simon and Garfunkel wouldn’t have a meaningful conversation until they ran into each other again in the summer of 1963. ‘I used to say to him, “Don’t stand next to me at the party – people will think we’re salt and pepper shakers,”’ she joked. ‘I remember during a photo session Artie said, “No matter what happens, I’ll always be taller than you.” Did that hurt? I guess it hurt enough for me to remember 60 years later.’Ĭarrie Fisher, the Star Wars star with whom Simon had a long-term relationship and a short-term marriage, was the same size as him. Simon told me in 2017 that he had been sensitive about his short stature all the way back to the Tom & Jerry days. The split caused a wound so deep in Garfunkel that it would never heal fully.ĭespite his huge success, Simon would often struggle with negative feelings and saw psychiatrists several timesīut there was resentment on both sides. The Paul Simon single and the new Tom & Jerry singles all flopped, so by the autumn of 1958, Tom & Jerry were history, personally and professionally. Garfunkel knew he had a wonderful voice but also that he was dependent on Simon for songs, which meant that Simon had all the power while he would always be in danger of being tossed aside He was crushed when he found out he felt betrayed. The mistake he and Prosen made – and it was a massive one – was not telling Garfunkel about their plan. Caught up in the excitement of the moment, Simon agreed and recorded two songs. These would be in addition to the Tom & Jerry record. When the record was a minor hit, reaching number 49 in the charts, Prosen asked Simon if he had any songs for the second single, and then suggested to him that he could record a couple of tunes on his own. Sid Prosen, boss of a small label called Big Records, liked the song and released it after renaming the pair Tom & Jerry. They soon felt good enough about their music to take it public by singing in school assemblies, and, on October 16, 1957, three days after Simon’s 16th birthday, they went into a Manhattan studio and recorded an Everly Brothers-type number called Hey Schoolgirl. They would record their vocals to measure how well their voices blended, and as Simon got more comfortable on the guitar, he and Garfunkel raised their ambitions again by trying to write their own songs – almost always patterned after something they had heard on the radio. ![]() Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel first started getting together to sing after they had performed in a school production of Alice In Wonderland.
